Illuminated or not? Shopfront signs after dark

Halo-lit, face-lit or lit from above — which suits your frontage, and when illumination isn’t worth it.

The short answer

If your customers pass after dark — or you trade winter evenings — illumination earns its keep. Halo-lit letters look the most considered, face-lit letters are the most visible at distance, and a trough light over a flat fascia is the simplest way to be seen without changing the sign itself.

Face-lit built-up letters

The letter face glows. Highest visibility from a distance and down a street, which suits businesses relying on passing trade or sitting back from the road.

Halo-lit (reverse-lit) letters

Light throws backwards onto the fascia, silhouetting each letter in a soft outline. Quieter and more premium, and usually the easier sell in a conservation area because the light is indirect. Slightly less punchy at distance — a fair trade for most high-street frontages.

Trough and spot lighting

A shielded light above the fascia washing down over it. Cheapest to install and to maintain, works with a sign you already have, and often the pragmatic answer on a listed building where cutting into the fascia isn't welcome.

Running costs and lifespan

Everything we fit is LED. Rated around 50,000 hours, which is roughly a decade of evening use before you'd notice dimming. Running cost is small on any of these — the real difference is installation, and how easy it is to service later.

When to skip it

If you close before dark most of the year, illumination is money spent on an empty street. A well-made non-illuminated sign in a good material, positioned well, does the job — and a trough light can always be added later.

Worth knowing: illumination is one of the factors that decides whether you need consent. See do you need permission for a shop sign first.
